What Hospice Is, and What It Isn't

Hospice is comfort-focused medical care for someone whose illness is no longer responding to treatment aimed at a cure. The goal shifts: managing pain and symptoms, supporting the whole family, and making the months ahead as good as they can be. Someone qualifies when a doctor determines that, if the illness runs its expected course, life expectancy is six months or less.
What hospice isn't: giving up. Choosing hospice is choosing a medical plan, one built around comfort, and families are often surprised by how much active care it involves: nursing visits, medications, equipment, and a team that comes to them. It isn't a one-way door either; if things change, families can step out of hospice care, and some patients stabilize and transition off. Who Pays for Hospice
FOR MOST FAMILIES, THE ANSWER BRINGS RELIEF: MEDICARE COVERS HOSPICE COMPLETELY FOR THOSE WHO QUALIFY.
Medicare's hospice benefit covers the nursing visits, the medications related to the illness, the equipment, and the aide support, with no out-of-pocket cost for covered services. Medicaid covers hospice for eligible individuals as well, and veterans may have full coverage through VA benefits, which AIP is able to provide.
One honest nuance worth knowing: when someone lives in a nursing home, hospice covers the care, but room and board stay a separate arrangement. What Actually Happens, Visit by Visit

Care happens wherever the patient lives: a private home, an assisted living community, a nursing home, or a personal care home. A full team shares it: a nurse who visits weekly and manages comfort, aides who help gently with bathing, dressing, and the daily cares, a chaplain and social worker for the whole family, and physicians overseeing the plan alongside your family's own doctor.
With AIP, new calls get a response within 30 minutes at any hour, the first visit typically happens within an hour of signed consent, and care can often start the same day. From there, the same familiar faces return, in English or Spanish, whichever your family speaks, and the support continues for the whole family through the year that follows.
When It's Time to Call

One of the most common things families tell hospice teams, ours included, is that they wish they'd called sooner. The signs tend to be quiet ones: more help would make the days easier, the hospital trips are adding up, keeping them comfortable is getting more complicated, or a doctor has mentioned hospice or comfort care.
Call AIP, describe what's happening, and you'll get straight answers from people who do this every day, including the honest answer, sometimes, that hospice isn't what your family needs yet. Either way, you'll hang up knowing your next step, and if the time comes later, you'll already know who to call.
